And it is. But somewhere between getting your acceptance letter and actually getting on the plane, a lot of practical questions start coming up.

Where am I going to live? Will I feel safe? How will I get to university? What if I don’t know anyone? Do I need to rent an entire apartment? And what happens if I only need a place for a few months?

If you’re coming to Puebla for an exchange semester, an internship, or another university program, these are things worth thinking about before you arrive. Finding the right place to live can make those first few weeks much easier.

Your first few days matter more than you think. Arriving in a new country is exciting, but it can also be a little overwhelming.

You may be getting used to a new university, a different academic system, another language, new transportation routes, and a city you’ve probably only seen through Google Maps or Instagram.

That’s why having a comfortable place to come back to at the end of the day makes a difference. Ideally, you don’t want your first week in Puebla to be spent buying furniture, figuring out how to set up internet, searching for basic household items, or dealing with a complicated lease. You want to unpack your suitcase, take a breath and start discovering your new city.

Why location makes a difference. Puebla is a large city, and San Andrés Cholula has become one of the main areas for university students, particularly because of its proximity to Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP).

For international students, living close to university can be especially convenient. You don’t have to spend your first weeks trying to understand a completely unfamiliar transportation system just to get to class.

And there’s another advantage: you have a lot of everyday things nearby. Restaurants, coffee shops, supermarkets, gyms and places to study are all part of the routine when you’re living away from home. Being close to them means you can spend more time actually experiencing Puebla and less time commuting.

You don’t necessarily need a traditional apartment. One of the first things international students often discover is that renting an apartment abroad isn’t quite as simple as it sounds.

There may be deposits, contracts, furniture, utilities, internet, maintenance and other details to figure out. If you’re only staying for one semester, it can feel like a lot of effort for a relatively short period of time.

A student residence can make things much simpler. At Urbanite, for example, rooms are already equipped with the basics you need to settle in: a private bathroom, bed, desk and chair, closet, blackout curtains, a mini fridge and microwave.

There are also shared spaces where you can study, work out, hang out or simply take a break between classes. The idea is pretty simple: arrive with your suitcase and have a place that already feels like home.

And then there’s the people you meet. This might actually become one of the best parts of your exchange.

When you study abroad, you are surrounded by people from different places who are also experiencing something new. Some are international students, others are Mexican students, and many are living away from home for the first time.

Living in a student residence gives you more opportunities to meet them naturally. You might meet someone while making coffee, studying in a common area or hanging out on the rooftop. Maybe you end up exploring Cholula together. Maybe someone recommends a restaurant you would never have found on your own.

These small interactions are often what turn an exchange semester into something you remember years later.

Give yourself time to experience Puebla. Your university will obviously be a big part of your experience, but it doesn’t have to be the whole experience.

Give yourself time to walk around Cholula, try food you’ve never had before, visit Puebla’s historic center, discover cafés, take weekend trips and simply get used to your new surroundings.

You don’t have to see everything during your first week. Some of the best parts of living abroad happen when you stop feeling like a visitor and start having your own routines: knowing where you like to get coffee, having a favorite place to study, recognizing people around your neighborhood and knowing how to get home without checking your phone every five minutes.

That’s when a new city starts to feel a little less foreign. Choose a place that makes the transition easier. Studying abroad already comes with enough new things to figure out.

Your accommodation shouldn’t be another source of stress. Look for a place that fits the length of your stay, is convenient for your university, gives you enough privacy to rest and study, and also gives you opportunities to meet people.

If you’re coming to Puebla for an exchange semester, internship or university program, Urbanite offers a student-focused place to live in San Andrés Cholula, right across from UDLAP.

You may only be here for a semester. But if you choose the right place to live, it can end up feeling like a lot more than just a room for a few months.

Moving to another country for a semester sounds exciting.
